5 Reasons to Use GreenGirt Instead of Conventional Z-Girts

Energy efficiency is an important consideration for any construction project done today. An efficient building has many benefits, including reduced energy usage, a lower environmental impact, reduced heating and cooling costs and, often, greater tax incentives. As part of the SMARTci continuous insulation system, the thermally-insulated GreenGirt sub-girt offers many advantages over conventional Z-girts, due to its unique materials and construction.

Conventional Z-Girts are made of steel or other metals that tend to conduct heat between the interior of the building and the exterior wall cladding, as well as fasteners that penetrate the interior surface to create thermal bridges between the interior and exterior. By using a composite design, the GreenGirt offers an insulated sub-structure that thermally isolates the exterior wall cladding from the interior and prevents thermal conduction through the fasteners. It creates an energy-efficient and secure attachment system for the wall cladding and encapsulates the SMARTci insulation completely, creating a weather-tight seal that reduces energy costs.

Here are a few of the reasons to use GreenGirt sub-girts in your next project, instead of conventional Z-Girts:

#1 Increased Energy Efficiency

Standard Z-Girts are made from metal and use metal fasteners for installation that provide a direct thermal bridge between the exterior wall cladding and the interior of the building. This allows heat from the interior of the building to escape to the outside during the winter. During the summer, it allows heat from outside to be transferred to the interior, increasing heating and cooling costs. The thermal bridging also allows cold spots to form in the interior of the wall, creating condensation and moisture problems.

Because GreenGirt is made from composite materials that do not conduct heat, the girts themselves prevent heat transfer between the interior and exterior, and they also provide an insulated surface for the interior and exterior fasteners to attach to, thermally isolating them form the interior and exterior walls and preventing heat conduction. The GreenGirt also features a weather-seal tab that interlocks with the SMARTci insulation panels, providing a seal and securing the insulation. Because the insulation is supported by the GreenGirt itself, no fasteners are driven through the insulation panels, which is another common source of thermal bridging in other insulation systems.

By eliminating the common causes of thermal bridging, the GreenGirt-based SMARTci system provides a more efficient outer envelope for the building, reducing energy usage and eliminating condensation.

#2 Easy Installation

Installing conventional insulation systems can be a time-consuming and difficult process. Thanks to the innovative features of the GreenGirt, installation of the SMARTci system can take as little as a third of the time of conventional insulation systems. The GreenGirts sub-girts are offered as part of a complete SMARTci installation package, which includes the GreenGirts, GreenGirt inserts, insulation and full installation instructions. With fewer components than competing systems, the installation is simple and efficient.

GreenGirts can be installed horizontally or vertically, and they feature a built-in tab that secures the insulation in place, instead of relying on fasteners through the insulation panels themselves. This makes the process quicker and eliminates thermal bridging. A universal cladding attachment system allows almost any type of cladding to be attached directly to the GreenGirt, which speeds the installation of the cladding and thermally isolates the fasteners from the interior. Finally, GreenGirt and the SMARTci system can be installed over almost any substrate, including open framing, masonry or metal surfaces, eliminating extra preparation work and allowing it to be used on existing buildings.

By reducing the installation time, GreenGirt can lead to lower labor costs and avoid unnecessary project delays.

#3 Superior Durability

Steel is subject to corrosion and electrochemical reactions that will weaken it over time and possibly lead to structural failure. Due to the composite construction of GreenGirts, they are as strong as steel Z-girts in similar applications, and are impermeable to corrosion or electrochemical reactions. The are fire rated, meeting Class 1, UL94 V0 and ASTM E84 standards, and they support deadloads and windloads of more than 100 pounds per square foot.

GreenGirts are made from a combination of naturally-sourced bioresin and recycled glass that lend them incredible strength, while still being environmentally friendly. They can also help your project earn points toward LEED certification, thanks to their use of environmentally-conscious materials and thermal efficiency.

#4 Reduced Costs

The quick and easy installation process of GreenGirts and the SMARTci system allows for immediate cost savings when installing the system, due to the lower amount of labor required.

Over time, the GreenGirts and Smartci system will also significantly reduce heating and cooling costs, due to their increased thermal performance over competing insulation systems. This can lead to a reduction in energy costs of thousands, or even millions of dollars over the life of the building, and the initial investment in the SMARTci system can be recovered in as little as 2 to 10 years through lower heating and cooling costs.

#5 Wide Compatibility

Steel Z-Girts are not necessarily compatible with all types of insulation systems, substrates or cladding systems. The GreenGirt sub-girts and the SMARTci system can be used with nearly any type of insulation, including Polyisoyanurate or polystyrene foam panels, mineral wool, fiberglass batts or sprayed foam insulation. The insulation is simply cut to fit over the weather-seal tab at the factory or in the field, deepening on the type, which allows it to interlock with the GreenGirt and provide a weather-tight seal that is impervious to moisture, water vapor and air infiltration.

GreenGirt can be installed over any type of substrate, including open framing, masonry surfaces, wood, metal or roof decks, and can accept nearly any type of wall cladding, including metal and masonry products. It is a versatile system that is compatible with many types of construction materials.

Combined with the SMARTci system, GreenGirts provide an attractive alternative to conventional Z-girt systems and their associated insulation and cladding systems. They are energy efficient, as strong as steel Z-girts, easy to install, environmentally friendly and they can help reduce energy costs significantly over the lifetime of the building.
